It's not that it's completely dead, but it's smaller than it used to be and the whole vibe is different. I'm pushing 40 and when I was young there were tons of bars and clubs that'd be packed and where people actually interacted with one another as a normal thing. Now there are like 1/4th as many of those places when you go they might be full, but it's all groups of friends sitting at tables and not socializing with anybody else.

I was born in LA and lived there most of my life, only moved away 6 months ago. There's a drastic difference between nightlife there now and what it was like 15+ years ago. Obviously LA is sort of a worst case scenario, a city in heavy decline, but I've seen similar stuff in other major US cities I've visited as well.
