He's just a victim of circumstances. The Irish flooded into New York and worked for nothing. Cheap labor destroyed the place.
Now nobody could make any money they said the Irish worked cheaper than a nigger.
Poor Bill was a butcher, and then the city filled up with Irish butchers and Bill couldn't make a dime. Crime exploded. Poverty was abound.
The only way you could make a nickle was to steal it. You couldn't walk down an ally without being mugged and stabbed in the belly.
So Bill formed a gang. The Irish also formed gangs.
Instead of the movie I highly recommend the book, Gangs of New York. It's not fiction it's a history book. Which they based the movie on and wrote a fictional story.
Bill Cutting was a real person.
Fighting against the Irish low wage workers trying to drive them out so parts of town could be prosperous again.
When he died he was given the biggest funeral parade New York as ever seen even up to this point. And all of it is a lesson that no matter the race, or where they come from, cheap labor lowers wages, crime rises, rent rises.
It's a lesson for us now. Today.
