Most buddhist countries have the death penalty and buddhism allows for self defense, although if there really isn't such a thing as a soul, and if this isn't the only chance we get, then self defense is not that big of a deal, if you're not too attached to this world, defending others is good karma though, in fact, if you don't defend your close ones, you don't fulfill your duties, you're producing negative, bad karma.

There is plenty of precedent in Buddhism for violence. The intention is what matters. One of the noble Buddhas told a story of killing a bandit to prevent the bandit from committing mass murder. The intention was to save the lives of the potential victim and spare the bandit from the negative karma associated with murder.
