I drive a Town Car, its the same platform and engine as the Crown Vic and you're right that its not that fast; but its rear wheel drive with a V8, a low center of gravity and its heavy so you can actually push it really hard around a corner and while you can still drift it the weight makes it very hard to spin out and the low center of gravity makes it pretty much impossible to roll.

Its a car that you can drive at the limits of what its capable of while still maintaining control. That's part of what made it a good cop car. If I tried to drive a Durango like I drive my Town Car around a corner I'd spin it or roll it.
