The Israelites themselves failed to do this because they constantly fell away from God, so God had His promise to Abram fulfilled by using His Son, Jesus Christ, to accomplish it. So in that sense the "chosen people" (a term that isn't even in the Bible), the jews, were chosen to bring about the salvation of mankind, even though they only accomplished it indirectly and not through their own will-in fact they unknowingly accomplished it by murdering their own king, which was an act of pure evil.
