But The "witch trials" (tm) that became a small puritanical craze between the years of 1500 to 1700s were usually mass hysteria combined with false accusations and power plays. Usually awful ones. Most of the time priests would try get the trial thrown out because of how stupid it was, but innocent people definitely did die.
