Every other day there's a report about fruit from such and such company being contaminated with lethal pathogens and the prices of foods can skyrocket in an instant as we've recently seen with eggs.
Spending 50 bucks now on some plants will save you many times that in food costs down the line even at the food prices we currently consider "reasonable" (or at least what we're used to).

It takes a few years before you really start getting a good harvest, so it's best that you plant as soon as you can.
