For nearly 200 years (4/5ths of our nation's existence), the ethnic makeup of this country was predominantly Anglo-Saxon/German, and broadly, our immigrants were almost entirely European. It's only as of the past 60 years that the floodgates opened and we are now getting flooded by every shithole in the entire world (which our politicians promised us was NOT what was going to happen when the Hart-Celler Act passed)--the narrative that the US is a melting pot of people from said shitholes is also a very recent idea. White migration didn't match the size of the existing population, just as high Indian migration today isn't matching the existing population. That is why almost all white Americans can trace some of their ancestry back to the start.
