I applied to 10 jobs and got 5 interviews for various sales positions inside and outside sales. I have a decent resume but the position for newbies to take is cold approach lead generator or business development representative. It is possible to do this but it's not simple. You need to be prepared to navigate the legal environment when poaching former clients.

Most employment contracts have non-compete, non-solicitation, and intellectual property clauses. You cannot contact or work with any clients for about 16 months after you leave your job. If you are taking work from them they can try to stop you.

Besides they separate the client facing work from the tech work for precisely this reason, to prevent personal relationships from forming between tech people and the customers. There's a lot of people (often women) with this job description.
