Japan is a Vichy state run by the US military. All of their technological advancement is merely military testing for consumer grade mind control devices. "The nail that sticks out gets hammered down" --- this isn't really a Japanese way of thinking. It's purely a US military thing. Japanese used to have a thousand little kingdoms with vastly different outlooks. If you didn't like it in one kingdom you could live in another.

They DID have autistic battle customs where they'd let warriors 1v1 each other for honor, but that was only between kingdoms that observed the same rules. Those that didn't were subject to all-out-war and hatred. Because, honestly, 1v1 Olympic wrestling style warfare is really cool.
