I don't know how it's done in Colorado, but in the UK, the absolute last thing you want is to be sectioned (for mental health deficits) during your criminal trial. People think it's the easy way out because you serve your sentence in a forensic hospital instead of a prison. The catch is that when your sentence runs out, they can keep you under section for the rest of your life if they decide you're mentally unfit for society. No need for a retrial, no maximum limit, nothing like that.
