Actually, here's what makes sense. All of this talk about the Epstein files from Trump was to apply pressure to someone, or some group, in particular. They were threatening to release it publicly as they demanded some concession from whoever it is. Maybe it's Democrats, maybe it's billionaires, maybe it's Israel, maybe it's all of the above or none. Just before Trump 180's and declares the list doesn't exist they get the concession they're looking for and Trump, as promised, eats the political hit to show them that he's serious on following his end of the deal. We can still assume that both Democrats and Republicans and/or other important people are all on the list, because that's the only scenario where it makes sense that Democrats also do not want to release it. Trump may or may not be on the list himself - he could've either threatened to redact just himself from the list or to go full scorched earth and burn everyone, including him.

So the question is: what could he possibly be getting that's worth alienating so much of his voter base before midterms?
