China has very strict citizenship rules but it's not necessarily because they are a nationalist country.

The main reason is because in other countries in East Asia there are millions of ethnically Chinese people who have been living there for generations, so the other Asian countries were fearful about China trying to claim jurisdiction of this overseas Chinese by treating them as potential citizenships, because this would create millions of dual citizens. They voiced their concerns to the Chinese government and the Chinese government agreed.

So in essence this citizenship policy has more to do with assuaging the fears of other Asian countries.
