i think the point was that China surpassed what they stole and for example, for smartphones, the only thing that is left is chips, which at least for phones, China stopped competing in smartphone chips in 2018-2019 and then were forced to start making them again because Huawei and ZTE was banned from using TSMC. Even when their current chips are few years behind, they optimize software so well compared to other Android makers, that they stand against the competition quite well.
