If so, Great Pyrenees is my favorite breed. They generally respond better to a more experienced hand, due to being bred for independence thousands of years ago. If you can get one trained right, they're fucking perfect. Mine is about 160lbs. They're also the strongest dogs around. In WW2 both sides tried to use them as war dogs due to their bravery and strength, however those dogs wouldn't fight in wars. Not one did either side ever get trained for it. The Great Pyrenees were used to haul canons through mountain ranges, though, with their specialized paws. They're so strong that if attacked by a pit bull, there are reported cases of the Pyrenees crushing it's fucking skull with a bit. They're built to fight fucking wolves but are the kindest dogs on the planet in every other situation. It's common for owners to say about their ferocity

They keep it inside until shit goes down and then they're insanely powerful.
If you're not experienced, get a German Shepherd and do an Operant conditioning program. You will have great success.

This. These dogs require a ton of exercise, and they suffer without it. Also stick to something smaller than medium sized. 15lbs can still jump in your lap and easily go for car rides. 20lbs is ideal. Smaller or bigger and it becomes a nuisance. Smaller breeds generally live longer, healthier lives.

Rat terriers are pretty great. Low maintenance, very few genetic disorders, smart, do t require a ton of space, great companions (bred as farm dogs).

Its the same thing as having a kid for 10 years. They cost money and your life ultimately starts to revolve around them. I love my dog... but sometimes I wonder.

If you do decide to do it... avoid getting a dog that sheds a lot. Also get it fixed don't listen to other people. Listen to the vets they are right. About vaccination, about food, about everything. The online nut cases are wrong. Their dogs died and they blamed the vaccines and the kibble.

All dog breeds were bred for a purpose. I recommended rat terriers above. They were bred for the purpose of pest control trol on farms before rodenticide was in common use. Standard poodles are actually water retrievers for hunting. Dalmatians are cart dogs (they run along side wagons) for extended hunting trips.

Little dogs are bred for companionship and appearance. They’re meant to look cute, but to also be super attached to their owner.

The only dog easier to train would be some kind of collie. German shepherds are so easy to train it is sometimes surprising. They have high persistence during training and take pride in being well behaved if raised to be confident. My first dog I got when I was 17 was a German Shepherd. He died a few years ago but the ONLY problem I ever had with him was that he was so fanatically obedient, he would sometimes start trying to enforce my rules on other dogs when they played or we went somewhere. He was never aggressive about it or anything- it was just a little douchey and self righteouss.

This is really the main point of dogs and everything else was secondary. A lot of people speculate about why dogs are called "man's best friend" even if they don't agree with the sentiment.
My personal theory is that it mostly evolved out of dogs having an intuitive understanding of the concept of property.
Even the smallest puppy can easily understand "this is mine, not yours." "This is yours, i will not take it without reason"
As they grow it's easy for them to understand "this is out shit, that is the line, and across it is the neighbor's shit"
A lot of people are fuckfaces and don't teach this to dogs but that doesn't change that it's pretty much the easiest possible thing for dogs to understand about us.

They are really good dogs. Good family dogs. I think the moral of this thread though is that you shouldn't get a dog unless you are the owner of a nice property and have a family. And can afford it. And golden retrievers make great family dogs quite possibly the best. Next to German Shepherds.

Tell her no. She will get one anyways. Depends on your climate. Huskies are great and have those natural blue eyes, but I think its mean for people to have them in warmer climates, they just were not breed for that. German shepards are great but you need money and time to train one. Black labs are great dogs, but need space. If you never had a dog, get one from the pound, rescue or whatever. Your gonna screw it up your first time, and they are all going to be killed anyways, best to give one a last chance at life to a newbie. If youve raised one or two, and have the money then put down for a quality dog, from a reputable breeder.

Go to a Shelter and rescue one. Regardless of breed they be good doggos

get something small (smaller shits and less need to exercise), preferably female (less aggressive and less likely to be territorial and want to piss on everything) and intelligent like a mini poodle cross, Jack Russel or border collie or something along those lines and you'll have the best chance of training it not to be a total pain in the arse. Big dogs are only for people with a lot of property and retards.
