I think it boils down to being troublemakers. they have no concrete beliefs or ideology. We've seen countless times how once something they champion becomes inconvenient or less convenient than something else they will pull a 180 on it. A large part of it is that it is a control apparatus, but I dont think thats the whole story, these people dont have any concrete personal beliefs either. And I believe that to find explanations for things we need to look at the things that seem to remain constant, and belief is not one of their constants. Instead what is constant with them is nihilism, bitterness and troublemaking.

By default they make trouble constantly and with anything with which they can make trouble, their trouble making is full of bitterness and they seem to believe in precisely nothing. The silent majority describes those people who at least want to try to be decent, a decent person doesnt cause trouble. Compare this group to my input on the former group, "the silent majority" has things they actually believe in, not even that their beliefs necessarily agree with each others but they each have things that they believe in, whether correct or not, strongly enough that they dont deviate from them easily.

And, looking at them, while keeping in mind that to understand something we ought look for the constants, decent folk dont seek fame or fortune or power.
