The police can only be either literal NPC Bots (thus zogbots) who mindlessly follow orders whatever they are, or they're ideologically driven to some degree in which case they are supporting whatever the legal status quo is. For example, someone who is ideologically opposed to gun control isn't going to remain a police officer in a place that enforces strict gun control. To further this thought experiment, think of the ideological differences between police in Apartheid south africa and modern day metropolitan police in london. They aren't going to be the same people unless they fall into the mindless NPC category.
So to answer your question, it depends on if they're enforcing laws I agree with. They should be viewed as nothing more than a tool to enforce the status quo of government, whatever that is.
