I've worked at an MSSP for 8 years. About 4 years in, I had a "virus troubleshooting" background (means nothing other than I fundamentally know more than most people do about systems in IT) and started our security department with the title "Security Engineer". Most everything I did with this title was received an alert for a SIEM (collects logs and does algorithmic alerting), read the alerts/logs, and made educated decisions to answer questions like "how do I block someone in Russia logging in as admin 4000 times". After a few more years of training other security individuals how to use basic deduction to solve security issues, I now handle government compliance around NIST 800-171/53/CMMC. It's mostly memorization and more "what if" scenarios, far more challenging.

This entire post was to say that any computer-security related job has a few levels:
1. "Analysts" read logs and listen to what a computer tells them. This is where jeets belong and should never advance because they don't have the brain capacity of "correlation/causation" and basic fundamental knowledge.
2. Technician/Administrator/whatever requires more brain power to do deduction. If you know how to ask a question and be curious enough to find an answer, you'll be fine.
3. Engineers typically build logic into systems (what I did). It's probably the least qualified of any title that has "engineer" because you're relying on an already-developed system to build off of.
4. Architects are your basement dwellers and what jeets are accidentally hired for. This is why SaaS is now terrible.

Those people are hired to fill diversity quotas, so you can't exactly compete with them as a white man.

If you want a comfy IT job as a white man you have no choice but go the technical side, where they can't replace you easily because you have actual skills.

But for that you need actual skills. Pick a programming language (Python or Go are good for cybersecurity), do bug bounties (Hackerone, Bugcrowd), try to compete in online CTF competitions, etc.

At the start you will probably suck a lot and not find anything, but you will still learn stuff in the process.

I got into IT about 15 years ago. It's fucking awful now, filled with clueless people who know nothing about computers but went into IT because "that's where the big bucks are", while all the software is written and supported by jeets and you have no control over anything because everything is SaaS and you are expected to just figure it out and make it work. It's DEI central. Also even though I've advanced my career over the years, wages are suppressed so fucking hard. I remember in 2013, exchange admins made 80-90K a year back then. Now I am a senior systems admin, and that includes all the duties of being an Exchange admin but fifty other things I'm supposed to be an expert on too, and I make 90K a year - and not in 2013 dollars when that was a good salary.
