People today will never understand competitive gaming in the mid-90s to mid-00s period..
Back then, if you wanted to play video games against other people, you had 2 choices.
1. Play against people in your area. This was fine, but most people just played for fun, which meant they sucked. If you were good then you basically had no competition.
2. Play online. This is where people went out of their way to play games against other people. Most were at least decent at the game. You had to spend money, but it was worth it.
PCs were expensive, and you had to have good equipment or you'd die to lag.
XBAND on Super Nintendo was $4.99 an hour.
Regardless of what idiots say, there were girls there, maybe an 80% guys 20% girls split. If you were good and could remotely market yourself, you could easily get a girl.
