It is a very, very, VERY well known thing that in china most people invest in mass produced cheap real estate in place of something like the stock market, gold, or even a savings account. however more often then not, these are not homes the person lives in or even rents out, and very often are so cheaply made they arent livable at all; its simply just that, an investment scheme due to real estate somehow becoming seen as more reliable than any other form of way to keep money safe.

China is weird in that residential properties return to the state after 70 years. That law is not yet 70 years old, so the first properties to revert back to the state will happen in 2030. Technically, the property was never sold to you, there was a 70 year lease from the government. The government has said there will be a way to renew the lease but hasn't said how that will be handled, if there will be renewal fees, or if there will be certain criteria.
Chinese people I've asked about this said it's not as big of a deal as it sounds because most residential buildings don't last more than 50 years anyway.

Land is finite. You can't produce more in response to decreasing supply or increasing demand so there must be some system in place to disincentivize unproductive hoarding of the limited supply. Even if the US is huge, only a tiny fraction of that land is within commute range of jobs and thus speculators only need to buy up a tiny fraction of the land to make the entire country practically unlivable. Property taxes should always be used to disincentivize speculative hoarding of underdeveloped land in high-demand areas, not as a means to raise money for the state. Any property tax that isn't basically a land-value tax is doing more harm than good even if it raises more money for the state because the system of incentives it establishes is always going to do more harm than what a government is able to fix with slightly higher revenue (and that's ignoring corruption etc). In some sense you can think of the government abolishing a tax that results in perverse incentives as a form of highly efficient government spending. The government is "spending" the tax revenue that it loses in order to eliminate the perverse incentive. And from a bang-for-buck perspective this is often the most efficient way to "spend" that money.
