I grew up in the poorest province in Canada, in the poorest area of one of the cities. It had a 50%+ child poverty rate, in other words 1/2 kids had parents making below the poverty line.
The first thing you need to understand is that poor people make poor people decisions. Every adult around me in my childhood, without exception, always had money for alcohol and drugs. I grew up poor, managed to do well in school, didn't party, drink or smoke, and I got a full-ride scholarship for college.
