Because you got the full reward of your productive effort.
If you handcrafted something and sold that to someone, you made 100% of the profit. It was rewarding, and people actually looked up to you and your ability to create, produce, maintain, etc.
Today it's nothing like that. Wage labor intrinsically means at LEAST 51% of your productive effort goes to your employer NOT YOU. (It has to be like this, or you would be a net negative on their balance sheet and therefore, not worth hiring) and then AFTER this 51% cut, another 30-60% of what's left is stolen from you by the government.
So you make 1 widget and sell it, and you get 25% of the profit, being extremely generous, while middlemen take the other 75% of the profit.
For most wage slaves today, it's more like taking home single digit % of the profit. Who has stories of saving their company literally millions of dollars? That would've meant something if it were YOUR company and YOUR savings, but since you are a wage slave, you saved your employer millions, and he cut you a check for $10,000 as a bonus (if you are extremely lucky and your employer is one of the 'nice' ones).
This is what wage slavery really means, and every person who works for another person directly as an employee is being turbofucked up the ass.
