What does /pol/ think of O'NEILL CYLINDERS? Would something like it be a good place to live your entire life in? What would the politics there be like?

I don't understand how the mirrors come into play. They are catching the natural sunlight to simulate a day/night cycle? Or are they required to heat up the interior? The masses at work here are impossible to control. How would you even get it to spin? You'd need 100s of engines that have to run absolute in sync or the whole thing will be ripped apart.

I think thats the big challenge of a cylinder world for me, how do you get it to not look like shit? a ringworld would be weird but its least kinda cool to look at, and its large enough that you wouldnt feel hemmed in. on a cylinder world you look up to the skies and see....someones backyard. seems like it would be both very disorienting and kinda depressing. it would need some kind of artificial skyline or something to make it not look as weird, or maybe sections that were left transparent so you could view the stars, but then that would give it serious structural weaknesses unless you used some fantasy material we dont currently have. get some of dat supaglass up there nigga

Dude would be horrible, you wouldn't have any freedom it would be worse than living in South Sudan because you wouldn't be able to reproduce everything would be controlled and you wouldn't eat meat probably, you would eat at most laboratory grown meat but it's very likely that you would eat insects and vegetables, you would live like a vegetarian animal.
Your quality of life would be extremely low, you wouldn't have internet or a computer, you wouldn't have many things, it would be very bad to live in a place like that, think of a world like North Korea but with fewer people and a worse quality of life than North Korea.

If it's something youre specifically interested in, check out the book "Colonies in Space" by T.A. Heppenheimer. It should be available in a free format on the NSS website (National Space Society). That's the most in depth run down regarding space settlements and the science behind them that I've come across.

O'Neill Cylinders are extremely big. Seeing someones backyard would be equivalent to looking up and seeing a commercial airliner at cruising altitude here on earth. I dont think you would be able to see the "upside down" side clearly with the atmosphere that would be present inside. It would largely be indistinguishable from day to day activities here on Earth, the biggest tell would be a slight deflection towards the rotating side of objects thrown/dropped.

There are better designs (Bernoulli Torus, others) but the idea of Space Islands has to happen or we won't be able to colonize space. Planets suck compared to perfectly tailored environments.
