The point was that you wear a mask to catch the germs so that you won't spread them to other people. That's why people in Asia wear them during flu season - it's not so they don't get sick, it's so they don't make other people sick.
The thought was that people with Covid were largely asymptomatic at first yet could still spread the virus by breathing on surfaces and people. Masks were supposed to prevent that.

Everyone acts like we knew everything we knew a year or two into it when we had only been in it a few months. There's no magical "device" that tells scientists everything they need to know about a disease. It looked dangerous, there were a lot of unknowns, so they assumed the worse as a precaution. The alternative was potentially catastrophic.
That's not the same as blatantly lying for the lulz. Yes, perhaps they got it wrong. But people act like there was some sinister plot behind it when, in reality, it was just people paid to be careful being ultra careful regarding the guidelines they pushed.

Air is Newtonian fluid, it will flow out through the path of least resistance. The mask was supposed to catch and contain gross contamination like mucous droplets ejected via sneezes and coughs not airborne droplets. It doesn't matter whether you wear two masks taped over your nose, it's still not filtering or containing airborne droplets. Basic handwashing and covering when cough or sneeze with your sleeves still is more effective.

The point was that the purpose of masks was always to avoid the spread of germs. Yes, we know now that it was completely airborne. When the masking guidance was first issued, we didn't know that for a fact - for all we knew, it could be spread by droplets, mucus, or a number of ways that masks could stop.
This is why these discussions are frustrating. Yes, the guidance changed. But it's because the guidance is based on whatever knowledge we have at a given time and the knowledge itself was evolving. We knew more a month into it more than we knew when it started. We knew more three months into it than we knew in the first month. And we knew more a year later than we did in that first half year.
You blame people for not knowing *everything* right from the get-go. That's not how the world works.
Again, I didn't blame people at the time for not masking, even if I thought it was foolish. I still don't blame people for not getting vaxxed. In times of uncertainty, people adopt different approaches. But it pisses me the fuck off when I get lectured for going one way by people who bitch about being lectured for going the other, as though you assholes didn't lecture everyone and make a huge stink at the time too.
