I remember rushing to Blockbuster to get a copy of a new release only to find the shelves empty. Good times. I also liked when they would sell there rental copies at a discount price. Ended up leaving with 4 new movies for $20 everytime. That Blockbuster DVD case plastic was so thick and fogged looking.

It's interesting getting older and seeing people who never experienced these times as the present wax nostalgic about them. It certainly didn't feel like "time had meaning" then, everyone was still busy as shit and modernity was still annoying. Just less so than now.

instant gratification takes away the soul of things which dulls there life
remember how special weed use to be when it was illegal
smoking weed was a straight up personality type it was that dank of an egrogoric activity
now that its legal everywhere and extremely potent its just another thing to do or get addicted to
coffee is the same case but worse

Although I can't help but feel nostalgic seeing that when I snap out of it I realize how pathetic it is that the things millennials look back most fondly on is cheap consumer slop that was poisoning our minds and bodies all along. Our ancestors looked back fondly on conquering entire continents, forming large families, settling unknown lands, tight knit homogeneous communities. While zoomers on their death bed will remember playing fortnite with their online friends whom they never met. IDK which is worse.

checked and I remember. I liked it then, and it became popular explicitly because of how outrageous Blockbuster's late fee based business model was. Funny how nobody is nostalgic about that, about their parents scrambling around trying to beat the clock on some ridiculous fee. Also nobody remembers that Blockbuster put all the local video rental places out of business. Did it to my local one.

all that was removed was the physical act of going to the store, you can still make your own ritual and whatever. You just have nostalgia glasses.

Actually yeah, my grandmother was from the 30s and they talked about horses.
People kind of made friends with them, gave them names and carrots and care and cleaning, it's true.
Life keeps getting more soulless and antiseptic with more tech to insulate us from it. You can't pretend otherwise.
It's not good for the mental state of people to live endlessly further removed from natural interactions, like spending time with your gf or family in the blockbuster aisles, as sad and pointless as that sounds when you can tell your oed tv to pull something up in a search now or grub torrents all day alone in your room like a third worlder.

You're not actually better than anyone from the 30s just because you were given the inventions of others is the main thing to remember when you make vapid zoomeresque comments like this.

This is funny, first of all that people are getting all sad about fucking BLOCKBUSTER, a dogshit chain that pushed out local video stores simply because it had the most money, but also that "end of the working week" shit.
Yeah dude, we used to know we were SLAVES for FIVE DAYS A WEEK, but now we uh... don't? People never do anything on weekends except rent video games and eat pizza, and one of those things is GONE. Nobody has ever gone to a bar after work on friday, that has never happened, I should know because I'm a fat retarded American.

I remember when Blockbuster went to 5-day rentals in like 1999 or 2000. My dad would take my siblings and I on Wednesday nights so we could have the games we rented up through the coming weekend. You had a much better chance of getting the game you wanted than if you went on Friday when the shelves were mostly picked through.

digital gaming is actually a hoax you dont own the game so you cant resell it

physical gaming will always be superior

but you would have to re-educate the masses to make it be desired

people prefer to lose money

and physical is faster and more convenient too because the game comes loaded on the disc already and can be delivered same hour delivery

so no downloading and no paying for storage

physical gaming died because of a mass propaganda campaign that "digital" was the new wave

it was fraudulent when you inspect the details further

movies on a disc is superior too because you can sell the movie after youre done

if you buy a 10$ movie and then put it on ebay for 7$ once you opened it

thats a 70% savings

and all physical media is instantly deliverable

its up to them to partner with doordash and things like that

blockbuster can succeed in the modern day by people unfortunatenly fell victim to "were high tech because we use digital"

That's how I got metroid prime, I would have never played metroid prime ever if I hadn't got it out of a bargain bin at blockbuster.

No, retard. Way to miss the completely miss the point. It's because the world in general has gotten more atomized, people are raised to spend more time interacting with screens than real people and they are less connected to nature. The economy also isn't as good as it used to be, inflation has destroyed the wealth of the middle class and that factors into it as well. Saying that it's just about Blockbuster is a complete strawman. The Blockbuster thing is just a proxy for people spending time together in real life

born in 94 but i never went to blockbuster. I remember asking my dad why we never went and he said it was because it was too expensive. We always went to a locally owned video store that was across the street from the block buster.

They're not old enough to remember mom and pop video stores which were destroyed by Blockbuster and Hollywood Video. Nothing better than going to the tiny video store on Friday and picking out two NES games from the owner's personal stash and playing all weekend. Former blockbuster wagey here. The rewards program at the time was $15 Canadian. That included one free movie rental for every 5 paid movie rentals. $2 off of one movie rental per month (a movie rental was only around $4-5 anyway). $1 off of a new movie purchase, $1 off of the purchase of a used movie. I had to memorize this and I still don’t forget it. I sold the fuck out of those blockbuster rewards memberships. I still have an old “passbook” somewhere.

I completely agree and I’ve noticed this too. You’re smart and people like you are why I still come here. Digital media was always a gay psyop. Physical media by the time of USBs and CDs became very easy to store, too. Now steam can lock you out of all your games you “own” for nothing. If I stay on offline mode for too long I get kicked off altogether and cant play until I get back onto internet.

you will have saved 66% of your money

but instead its sitting on your steam account and you cant do anything with it

so steam is for literal losers period they hate money

Honestly I miss working there so much. It was the nicest job I have ever had. You would get games and movies a week before their release date so you could watch/play them in order to give recommendations. I got GTA San Andreas while in high school a week before the release date. I was practically a celebrity because of it. Also it was during the end of the golden era of movies, so decent movies still came out. The smell, the snacks, even some of the customers. I miss it all.

Since the older generations decided to start shitting down our necks and calling it entertainment, we just made our own form of it, memes.

You’re also forgetting most of us grew up on this stuff just the same. I’m a 98 zoomer and the only part I remember being any good was the popcorn machine.

It’s time to stop projecting your own shortcomings on us. We get that we had the internet, but so did you for a long time and you just used it to fall for even more Jewish propaganda. Don’t be mad that none of us fell for the psyops you did, just be better

no, it's not even remotely the same

>friday night, been home from school 2 hours, done with your homework
>alone in bed, catching your baseball over and over, thinking about the girl you like
>you realize that if you're bored, she's probably bored. you should call her when you're mom's done with the phone
>ring ring ring "hey Jill, im bored, wanna do something"
>"omg hi jack im bored too ok!"
>"do you like horror movies? want to go pick out one from blockbuster?"
>"omg yes i love scary movies"
>"ok i'll pick you up in an hour"

and that's only the initial planning. that's before you even get to the store. clicking an icon on your phone demolishes all of the human interaction in this chain of events. you don't know what you're missing out on because you can't comprehend your own blind spots and atrophied social sense.

something was taken from you that you don't even know you're supposed to have. this is why we harp on it. imagine if gen Alpha didn't know you could communicate using your mouth. and they try to explain to you how much more efficient texting is. that's what you're trying to do, you simply don't have a case because you don't know what you're missing.

Half of the experience of Blockbuster was just wandering the aisles, picking out cases and discussing them. Movies used to have cool artwork on the cases too, because it has to stand out.
Also you’re leaving out the part where you call the girl and her parents answer. Zoomers can’t even make fucking phone calls, imagine them having to call and speak to the parent of a girl they like.

Oldfag here. I used to hate nostalgic fucks like myself, but the past five years has accelerated everything so fast. It's impossible not to look back with some kind of nostalgia now.

2001 was the first big changing. Everyone born after that year, but especially after 2008 is an NPC in some form or another compared to older generations. The very social fabric of our society has become completely unhinged.

If in the year 2000 a 15 year old girl said : "I take cute bikini pictures of myself and share these online publicly. Thousands of men can see it and like, comment and reply to my pics" - there would immediately be social services involved and it would be the biggest scandal ever heard of at 99% of schools . Nowadays this shit is just completely normal.

In 2010 selfies weren't even socially accepted. If you stood around too long in one spot endlessly taking pictures of yourself people would genuinely think you were a fucking weirdo. Nowadays? Almost considered weird if you DONT participate in narcissistic behavior on social media.

Dating before apps used to be 100 times better. a 5/10 guy would eventually always hook up with some 5/10 girl at a party somewhere. People still actually talked, attraction was formed. Everything is so fucking fake these days. Tinder was a nuclear bomb to the human race.

Dont get me started on the internet before Web 2.0. It also helped that it took time, effort and money to actually own and operate a PC back in the early days, so that weeded out a lot of retards. Most kids are technologically illiterate. They can type fast on their iPhones but have no clue about how any of the underlying technology worked. My father in his 80's had to explain to my 15 year old nephew how to install a VPN because he can't focus on anything for more than 5 seconds because of tiktok brain.

Now with AI everything is going to become increasingly more gay. We will create gay AI's that create even gayer AI's.

Mom-and-pop rental stores were better. I remember being about 10 years old, begging my mom for some money to rent a couple of games. I had to ride my bike along a highway connector road and cross a narrow, dangerous bridge to get there. Parents today would probably get locked up for letting their kids do that. Once there, they offered free popcorn with a game or movie rental and had new game releases set up for people to try. They even had a "secret" backroom with a curtain covering the door where they kept the pornos. I’d sometimes peek my head in to catch a glimpse of the covers with the naked ladies.

Going to the rental store was fun. Everybody in our family would make their requests. Dad wanted his movie, mom hers, sister her music, and the babies a kids movie, I always went for video games. We got to the store and split up. When going to the rental store there was a 100% chance of running into somebody you knew from school so you got to spend more time with them while you searched around. When we were ready after what seemed an eternity we got in line and got ready for a purchase. We even got the extra stuff like popcorn bags, candy and soda for our weekend. We had a great weekend and everybody had fun. My parents would give me all the videos and merch and I had to go return them on Sunday evening by myself, the store was closed and it seemed sad in a way. We got ready for the next weekend.

>>510490887
Yes it is generally but the main issue to zoomers is that this is now considered the minimum. Video tapes were a luxury in the early 80's but became cheap and easy to rent so it was an awesome experience. Same with renting games but now there are 500 demos you can play for free or just play fortnight that there is no excitement. It just another zoomer thing they barely got to experience. Its like how gen-x talks about free roaming before stranger danger came around and how everything was less regulated in general.

Yea but the ultimate hack was to go to blockbuster early like mid afternoon skipping high school because back then all movies, video games and cd’s all released on Tuesday. So you could hit up blockbuster for movies/video games then go hit Best Buy, circuit city, Sam goody and the other music places for cd’s and be set for the next two weeks until more releases… Otherwise when you were a kid you had to find. The slim pickings on the popular stuff and ask the people who worked there if there had been any returns and to check the return box for what you were wanting.

it doesnt matter if they actually managed to run the business right or not

the concept of a physical renting of gaming / movie store can and should still exist today

just because they might have gotten expensive and were bad at doing it doesnt mean theres not a place for it

how many people would have rather rented a switch 2 to see if they like it so they didnt have to buy the 450$ device

maybe everyone? like millions of people

blockbuster was a case of corporation just not wanting to deal with it and do it right

Downloading my movies and other media was like finding the City of Gold and at the same time being in a great war against companies going digital only. It was great at first but then just got routine after a while. Companies making things worse and worse makes me disgusted. It feels like I have forgotten how to have fun. The only time I get a little spark back is when I buy special edition box sets of stuff.

I'll be a contrarian for the sake of the Zoomers.

I think they still seek out exactly what you are describing, but as you said, a lot of modern entertainment is bland and homogenized.

BUT, a lot of zoomers wind up going down hyper specific rabbit holes into what could be called Nu-Niche Media. Everyone knows the Backrooms for example, but there are a lot of lesser known analog series on YouTube.
I think the drive to discover unique things still exists, it's just changed forms as entertainment has changed.

Comfy post anon, it gave me nostalgia. I did the same. There was no internet back then, or barely anyone had it anyways for a long while. So the rental store was also a good place for recommendations to find new things. I loved just browsing through the video's and then the PS1 game section and picking out everything that looked cool and then looking at the pictures on the back and reading the blurb. Everything looked so fun and exciting and it was often legitimately hard to make a choice. Whatever game/film you picked would radically determine how your weekend went. We all had those weekends where we accidentally picked a dud, and then had those other weekends where we found gold and it was so good we later went out and bought a personal copy.

Also do you remember sharing copies of games and video's with friends at school. I remember one day everyone agreed the day prior to bring all of their video games. And at recess and lunch there was a massive crowd of boys from every year in the school all trading games and keeping track of who borrowed what. It was like a school swapmeet for video games and movies. The rentals all agreed to last a week and the weekend, and return to original owner. If you borrowed something from someone, you had to give them something in collateral to borrow so no stealing.

They type like edgefags from 2005 because they're literally at least 20 years behind the curve at all times
It's why they all buy shitty BMWs and fuck them up by the hundreds. Because when they watch 80s and 90s Hollywood movies with white yuppies driving them it still looks like it was shot in the future compared to their film quality so they assume it's still the white yuppie thing to do
Recently the younger ones have moved into the early 2000s culturally and started buying mustangs

At Blockbuster the late fees were around $2/day, which added up quickly. If you kept it past (I think) two weeks, they assumed you weren’t bringing it back and sold it to your account. At that point when you brought it back it had to be readded to the inventory so they would charge you a restocking fee too. Most times I’d just wave the restocking fee if they agreed to pay the $14 for a week of late fees. For gaming systems you had to put a deposit down to get it, which was usually a couple hundred dollars.

You used to be able to chat with the cashiers and they'd legitimately tell you what was good and what was shit
They used to hook me up with the perfect movies when I brought a girl in
I remember renting consoles I didn't have and plowing through games without any spoilers guides or walk-throughs existing unless you wanted to buy a hardcopy book.

I’m sure why the Dreamcast never took off, it was ahead of it’s time since it got dropped in the PlayStation and N64 era and got over taken by the PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube era.

Nigga you can't use an OS file system because every screen you've ever used was designed for literal boomers who still couldn't find the any key after 20 years. You weren't even supposed to have that tech. It was designed by Apple for literal actual adult boomer retards to finally get their money, but they put it in your dirty hands to stop you from crying, and look what happened.

for me it was the smell of hundreds of fresh VHS tapes sitting on the shelves. i loved walking into the local video store with my dad after he got off work for the week. it was a special kind of sensory overload ill never forget.

sears was better than amazon

shipping to a central location is cheaper than shipping to individual houses for each item

retail is mathematically more sustainable than e commerce

Is there any conceivable way to run a brick and mortar video rental store nowadays? Maybe have it be partially a mail model, but who even has a Blu-ray player? As a kid my dream teenage job was to work at my local video store, but they all but died out when I was employable.

Oh man I totally remember the smell. I’ve been in the process of converting all my home videos from VHS to mp4, its so depressing seeing life before smartphones. We can never go back either but I’m raising my kids like the 90s, they don’t even watch TV.

Yeah but once you add in physical location rent, employees etc overhead Netflix took off once they were able to scale streaming without having to send physical copies and if I’m not mistaken Netflix blew up off their video game rentals and not off movies. I can’t remember the name of the video game service but that’s what gave them massive market share.

I posted this earlier but there’s no point. You’re trying to capture lightning in a bottle. The time has passed. No one wants to deal with some brown dead eyed zoomer renting them movies. Half of the fun of blockbuster was chatting with the movie buff wagies. Zoomers would ruin it. And theft would be rampant.

it has to include delivery u can get a game to a customer faster than they can download it

physical gaming is superior

and same thing with movies if u can get a cheap rental to someone delivered then why would they even need netflix and shit

its very doable they just didnt want to make it a reality they believed in fake digital meme shit

put the movies on drives i guess because they dont even have dvd players on em anymore
