They had a lot of good things going for it life was fine, lots of equality and economic growth was fine pre Gorbachev despite lies it was stagnating before. Also all races were segregated with no black people. Basically a separate republic for each racial variation even including different types of white people.

The black market was the most powerful element. In a bank you got 80 cents to a single Ruble. On the street you got five Rubles for a dollar. It was a closed economy at that point.

Meat was gray and mysterious. Lines at stores went on forever. Milk was never fresh, always yogurt-like, and sold in bottles that had been dipped in green or blue clear paint so you couldn’t tell the color.
