Maybe we could create some sort of "VPN only" internet. So, basically, you have to pay to access this internet, sort of like living in a non-ghetto neighbourhood. The VPNs would ensure that users were still relatively anonymised (no less anonymised than accessing from your home internet connection). What I mean is, you're more anonymised than paying for a 4chan pass or whatever. Not 100% sure how this would work (maybe the VPNs pay sites that you access, so it's also like an ad blocker)... but creating a segregated internet based on ability to pay and free market principles would probably work better than having the government do it.

The point of China’s great firewall isn’t to keep westerners and outsiders from accessing the Chinese internet (which you can do with ease if you want to, just don’t expect to understand it since everything’s in Mandarin) it’s to keep Chinese people from being exposed to news, events, and ideas which go against the government’s narrative.

Having a similar “great firewall” designed for western countries would do nothing to protect the west, outside of making it even easier for billionaires/politicians to keep scandals like the Epstein files out of the public eye. Heck, 4chan as it is now wouldn’t even be allowed to exist if such a “firewall” were put in place given all of the anti-establishment narratives it lets people express.
