Our nations are fucked up beyond repair and there is scarce hope for any better, to me it seems like we are all just circling the drain. yep, well said. you can also join some good groups that are working towards things you value (my wife and i are members of a couple homeschool advocacy and legal support groups, for example) and perhaps engage in low level political lobbying by doing things like going to your local MP/Representatives open office hours to let them know that certain issues are important to you and others.

Also providing a good example goes an extremely long way. I work out in the basement and my 4 year old asked me the other day to help him do pullups because he sees me do them. It's not a real representation of American values. On Sunday, my neighbor dropped what he was doing and came over to help me work for 11 hours in the hot sun on a project I needed help with, and I would do the same thing for him any day. Out here, we want all those same things. Healthy community is something you have to work at building, you don't just get it for free. And being a European, I don't expect you to fully understand American individualism, but you shouldn't pretend like we're all that different, because we aren't.
