Bill gates is famous for being a predatory laymen that stole a company from actually talented people and set the progress of computer science back 20 years in the process. Microsoft of the 90s was run like a lightbulb company, deliberately suppressing the advancement of the technology it specialized in to try and keep it in a less reliable but more profitable state. The damage his conniving did to the field basically granted Microsoft an inept monopoly until Apple and Research in Motion sidestepped it by developing mobile devices.

It may be hard to think about it now, but computer technology stagnated in the 90s instead of growing exponentially like it does now, and that was the direct result of Gates' active suppression of the field in the name of profiteering and monopolization. At the time it looked like the personal computer, a potentially world-changing technology, was going to be smothered in the crib by one man looking to make himself a billionaire on technology he didn't understand. Smart handheld devices like Blackberries and eventually smart phones emerged from a necessity to evade the reach of Microsoft's monopoly by creating your own non-PC platform to develop from.

Gates grandfather was a lawyer and eugenicist in early 1900s that was for population control. Bill's father was a lawyer that founded starbucks and was a director of planned parenthood.
Bill got a 2 million trust fund from his grandfather and dropped out of college.
His mother (who's grandfather was head of the Seattle federal reserve) was on the board of Red Cross. So was the Chairman of IBM. She arranged a mtg with Bill and the CEO of IBM.
IBM had a computer but no OS (ya, right). Bill said he had an OS (he didn't). Bill arranged a time to give the demo (couple months out). Bill went to "Seattle Software" and bought a version of QDOS. Modified it a bit with Paul Allen and sold it to IBM.
The whole story is bullshit. He was given the rigths to the OS that IBM built because of monopoly concerns.

Because we went from having a variety of operating systems to just Windows (Apple almost died in the 90s) in like 6 years. Microsoft was very aggressive in building their monopoly at a time when the economy was rapidly consolidating. Everyone recognized the problem. While Microsoft might not have been so hated by the world population in aggregate, the web was dominated by techies at the time so there was a disproportionate amount of hate for Microsoft in particular on the web. Immediately after Windows established its dominant position in the computer OS market, Microsoft started integrating Internet Explorer into the operating system in an attempt to monopolize web access. This further antagonized techies. It was difficult to find a social space on the web without people complaining about Microsoft. The complains were legitimate, but I think it was also a fun pastime for people who perhaps did not fully grasp the issues at hand. Hating on Microsoft was also an early internet meme.
