It's a modern perversion of Indo-European spirit animal ritual. The Koryos were bands of young men cast out into the wilderness as initiation. Their survival depended on forming literal wolf packs and behaving in a savage, feral manner to learn to integrate their shadow. They'd conduct rituals where they'd wear wolf pelts and howl, the whole bit. European culture retained aspects of this ritual throughout history. Viking berserkers, Spartans being cast out into the wild, Roman Legionaires wearing animal pelts of the lands they conquered, etc. Europeans have just always had a thing for dressing up as animals to draw from inner, primal strength. For some reason furries are all finance bros, pilots and engineers, most seem to have piles of disposable income and come from upper middle class backgrounds. Disney is likely the issue as that is their drug of choice and the animators at Disney were themselves furries during the period where many of the early modern furfags were approaching adolescence.
