It is probably determined by the fetal womb environment i.e nurture. It is known that children born to older women, and children who have many older siblings tend to be gayer. The womb environment is still not totally understood. In the first 8-12 weeks of pregnancy before the placenta is formed, the mother and the child basically share a bloodstream. The mothers hormones, diet, current health status (eg. Autoimmune disease, diabetes), age, type of pregnancy and just randomness can all affect the fetus early in development. There can be some genetic component, for example, if a woman has Lupus she could have a higher chance of having a gay baby. But there are so many factors that it's hard to study.
