I think either he was threatened with something else, or they have blackmail material over someone in his family, or they have altered the information to show him or someone from his family as being involved and then he received bad advice about how to handle that (he should have released it anyway).

In any case, I'm not happy about how he's handled it, but I still don't regret voting for him over the alternatives.
