Red pill me about Japanese imperial family. Are they still relevant? What’s the public public opinion about them?

They're strictly ceremonial, which is both written into the constitution and was the historical norm - Meiji and Showa were the aberrations, for most of Japan's history they were someone's puppet or another. Occasionally politicians want to change succession rules (it's currently male line only and there aren't many males left in the family).
And they're famous, media covers them and all, but their jobs are like leading rituals and diplomatic visits and stuff.

Japan was unified in ancient times when politics and religion were undifferentiated, and this continues to this day.

They were never relevant nor held any power, and that's basically an open secret.
Back in Sengoku period when Shoguns took turns taking power, they took deal with every one of them that they wouldn't interfere with how they govern the country, and they'd be happy to market the new power to the people, as long as they don't wipe them out.
This weird relationship with the government still continues to this day, that's why they were not punished by the US during WW2 (as Tojo was the one that actually held all the power), and they also worked alongside GHQ to propagate Japanese citizens to listen to them, and throw away the old nationalist values.
tldr they are just a marketing department of the government, and they don't hold any ideologies but be the voice for the strongest guy in charge for the sake of protecting the bloodline.

He's actually regarded highly for handling negotiations with US well, and avoided complete colonization of Japan by acting out as the faux government, and making time while Japan built a new government.
