>From July 10 to July 13, Rubicon combat crews attacked rail transport used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces to deliver military supplies. Diesel locomotives were hit near the village of Belozerskoye near Dobropolye. The train derailed.

>heckin doomers...
Here's the thread Tatarigami posted that Diabeetus David was so upset about

>The seriousness of the situation on the frontlines was recently laid out in detail by Olexandr Solonko, a soldier currently serving in Donetsk Oblast. I strongly recommend reading the translated version closely if you’re trying to understand the situation on the ground. >Thread:
>2/ We are approaching a moment when we will very likely face another major crisis on the front. While the world's powerful play their games of "two weeks" and "50 days" and try in every way to demonstrate resolve where there is none, we will have to withstand the desperate pressure of the Russians. Both on the front and in the rear
>3/ Where we are now: The Russians believe that if they press with all their might now, they can finally break us. This belief is based, among other things, on the long, attrition war, the escalation of regular attacks on military targets, the defense industry, and the terrorizing of civilians in the rear
>4/ They aim to undermine our economic potential, disrupt mobilization through subversive activities, propaganda, and now airstrikes, as well as aggressive informational and semantic warfare. Their often successful efforts to undermine Ukraine's support from foreign actors...
>5/ ...while having the backing of China, North Korea, and foreign companies that love money and sell anything that helps them fight against us. And also some of Ukraine's Western neighbours, who are our open enemies.
>6/ Russians believe that the cumulative effect of these 3.5 years will soon yield results. Whether in 60 days or end of the year, the exact timeline is not as crucial. Whether the West will back its words with action and whether we can fix our mistakes will determine the outcome

I think it's just a distraction or targets of opportunity, there is nothing important there, but Ukraine still needs to defend it. The goal seems to be forcing Ukraine to divert resources to defend small villages far away from the actual battles.
Kupiansk is deffinitely a target, not the primary target ATM, but Kupiansk -> Liman should be on the list considering it would indirectly help Donbas front.

The range of these rockets is abysmal, when fired from an arial platform you essentially have 4-5km to work with, ground based would be worse. The missiles would have had to essentially pass straight over the launch platform.

Eh, it's not impossible as long as the cruise missile is flying towards the launcher and is spotted early enough. They're not hard targets.
The Gerans will be vulnerable to them too, if they fly low. With high approaches only during terminal approach, and even then probably only if the designated impact point is reasonably close to the launcher. Doubt these missiles achieve high lateral load factors, but I'm too lazy to search for documentation.

it's possible, but I think Russians are more likely to do something like that in Sumy
Zelinskyiyi considers Sumy the most important front, the closer you are to Kiev, the more important you are
Following that train of logic, it would make sense for Russians to prepare a force and get somewhere in Sumy or Chernigov oblast. It would be much more effective than feinting towards Kharkov because everybody knows Russians are not going to siege a city of 2mil people.

>Eh, it's not impossible as long as the cruise missile is flying towards the launcher and is spotted early enough.
yeah sure but the rockets are meant to be salvo fired from helis at area ground targets and were introduced in 1972 to target patches of jungle in Vietnam. Apparently they had a range of 8km.
And now they've put expensive laser targeting and steering kits on each rocket, reducing the range and greatly increasing the cost. Then you take all that and fire it from the surface on a ballistic trajectory relying on god knows what to set the time of launch and the angle + azimuth.
as the norwegianon says, the range is probably greatly reduced.

They don't have to, just point your own laser designator at it.
But I am legit unsure what this projectile is. An artillery shell wouldn't come flying at this angle, but it doesn't really look like a rocket either. In fact it appears to be some kind of tracer round, which makes little sense for a laser guided projectile, yet if it's a missile that's rather old fashioned.

They're just used as a rocket motor, nothing much has changed about that since then. APKWS was designed with (unmaneuverable) air targets as one of the engagement scenarios in mind.
>expensive laser targeting system
If I'm not jumbling up my numbers from memory here these things go for little more than 10k$ a pop. That's at least four times cheaper than a Stinger (or comparable western MANPADS). If the MIC isn't syphoning too much money off these things should be cheap and easy to produce in large quantities.
>Then you take all that and fire it from the surface on a ballistic trajectory relying on god knows what to set the time of launch and the angle + azimuth.
The targeting computer does that for you. It doesn't operate fundamentally different than any other anti air missile, it will use proportional guidance to fly an intercept course. The engagement envelope is just way smaller due to poor range and lateral load factor, but that doesn't matter too much in a point defense scenario against comparatively slow, unmaneuvering targets.
Really, until fibrelasers become widespread this and autocannons firing AHEAD like munitions are the only practicable solution against Geran like drone spam. And unlike the latter this can be produced by the ten thousands within an acceptable timeframe.

Assuming he's not coping in his description on X, he's probably been part in the Gulf War / Afganistan with a defnite maybe in Iraq.

Now, to break it down:
>14R - Bradley Linebacker Crewmember
>16R - Vulcan Crewmember
>96B - Intelligence Analyst
Adding to that, he also has stated (in Congress) that
>"i am a former non-comissioned officer in the army, where i drove military vehicles every day as a US Army certified master driver for nearly 22 years of service."

He's running a US Military museum in Temple, Texas, as well as a paintball club (as a way to cope with his PTSD that got him disabled vet status).

>The targeting computer does that for you.
Yea sure stuff like the SVP-24 Gefest tells a pilot in an Su-24 the vector and speed of flight and indicates when the rocket salvo has to be fired. But we're not talking about firing stuff in a parabola at a fixed target, we're not even doing something like picking a particular point that an LMUR fired from a Heli has to hit. We're sitting in a truck or boat, trying to initiate targeting and laser guidance on a near supersonic cruise missile or a fiberglass drone. Sure a targeting computer can plot a solution but how would you target it? Particlarly given that today's cruise missiles and drones are constantly maneuvering and changing course throughout Ukraine? Ok maybe it's for point defence only and not midcourse interception but even if radar plots the track, does each rocket have an active laser? Surely not. Is the target lased by some other designator? How would that work other than pure dumb luck (assuming that the Ukrainian report is true)

This is not the case, we're seeing a media bias because of how easy it is to get footage of FPV drones versus how it's virtually impossible to get crisp up close footage of
>Artillery pounding the target
>Laser guided munitions
>Off-road/path mines
>Top-attack guided missiles
>Sabots going through a tank
>Traditional ATGM's
>Mortars
>Grenade launchers
Everybody is getting caught up in the FPV hype because that's exactly what we're seeing here on the internet. They're the poor mans ATGM/Artillery, they'll have their place. But the amount of bad takes surrounding them is crazy.

>We're sitting in a truck or boat, trying to initiate targeting and laser guidance on a near supersonic cruise missile or a fiberglass drone. Sure a targeting computer can plot a solution but how would you target it?
Like with any other air defense system, wait for the target to enter the engagement envelope and fire. No clue how the fire and control system for these trucks looks like, but this is really easy to implement nowadays.
>Particlarly given that today's cruise missiles and drones are constantly maneuvering and changing course throughout Ukraine?
They're really not. The Gerans can't in the first place, and the cruise missiles mostly fly straight and as low as possible. An anti air missile really needs minuscule flight performance and overload to intercept a target like this. The big limitation is detection time for cruise missiles and the limited engagement envelope making it necessary to be very close to the flight path or even the point of impact to have any chance for the anti air missile to even reach the target.
>Ok maybe it's for point defence only and not midcourse interception but even if radar plots the track, does each rocket have an active laser?
The earlier APKWS missiles are semi active laser homing, just like AGM-114 Hellfire or Krasnopol for example. A laser paints the target, a pretty dumb sensor at the front of the missile goes for wherever the strongest return signal of a specific wavelength is coming from. So you'd have either a radar or optical system tracking the target and simultaneously painting it with a targeting laser.
APKWS gen 2 has IR guidance for terminal approach I think, but I have no clue if those are produced in significant numbers. Increases cost, obviously.

I didn't save the picture sadly, but hohols published stats on the causes for their wounded/dead from the Pokrovsk front a month or two ago. Artillery was almost tied with mortars somewhere around 3 %, laser guided munitions, ATGMs and anything fired by a tank at sub 1%. The vast majority of their wounded/dead came frome mines and drones.
Artillery still plays a major role in bogging the enemy down avoid taking massive casualties of course, but it was really surprising at how much worke the drones actually get done. I would've been mostly with you on that line of reasoning before.

I think you're wrong, anon, picrel. There's a lot of reports of cruise missiles and drones vectoring to attack cities from the West, for example.
> So you'd have either a radar or optical system tracking the target and simultaneously painting it with a targeting laser.
That's the part that seems really tough to me to jerry-rig. You have to have dispersed laser emitters (maybe part of the APKWS SAM site) tied to a radar / optical+IR sensor net that's easy and cheap to produce and that's slaved to the APKWS firecontrol. Do you see that as being even reasonably effective?

All part of one system, maybe with additional target information from external, longer range tracking systems.
It's really not difficult to designate the target, we've been building things like that since the 60s and strapping them on planes. On a truck you don't even need a gyro stabilizer or whatever, the track rate you need can slower and for APKWS you deal with (very) short ranges on top of that. Every Krasnopol hit you've seen had the target marked by a low cost Orlan-10 or a comparable drone. Laser target designation systems can be built very crudely.

>The Ukrainian counter offensive in Kharkov was 20,000
The original assault yes, but then it got reinforced with another 30K pulled from the south.

It was wild when they could have 3 fronts with 20-30K soldiers each and a mobile reserve of another 30-35K that could reinforce whatever front showed most promise.
That was 120K soldiers involved in a three prong offensive, that's a proper field army!

The Kursk incursion was the biggest in over a year and it peaked at something like 20K at any given time, with resources pulled from defenses all along the front line to maintain the force.
20K is still a lot, but the only way they could even reach that was by removing soldiers from defenses.
And to maintain it?
Even more soldiers from the mobile defenses had to be pulled, primarily from Kupyansk, Avdeyevka and Zapo where they were already getting hammered.
In real terms the actual available offensive force last year (without depleting defenses) was about 10-12K.

So despite Ukraine recruiting some +30K soldiers per month (officially 1-1.2K contract soldiers per day) over the last two years, their offensive capability has dropped by 90% or ~110K soldiers.
And their defensive units are down to 40% strength with large parts of the front having only a handful of soldiers per km, relying on drones to cover the gaps.

We are living in accelerating times.

Again, we're not talking about a Krasnopol hit on a fixed ground emplacement, we haven't even seen a single example of a Krasnopol hit on a slow moving target as far as I can see. We're talking about somehow marrying radar and / or optical sensors to a dispersed net (or just set) of lasers to accurately pick out and transmit targeting information about to lasers that is moving in 3D at high (and even near-supersonic when it comes to cruise missile) speeds. This isn't just about how cheaply a laser can be built, that's hardly the biggest problem.

>yeah sure; I wanted to show that it wasn't "straight line and low" as you had said earlier
For the context of air defense that is essentially a straight line. Even shitty anti air missile require high G maneuvers to dodge when you get into their engagement envelope.
>we haven't even seen a single example of a Krasnopol hit on a slow moving target as far as I can see
Me neither, but that's mostly due to limitations of the shell and the range offering the ability to just wait until whatever you want to nail is stationary. Tracking targets is trivial. I don't have any suitable webms, but here's the Litenig pod of an F/A-18E tracking an Su-22. Both at higher relative velocities and ranges than what short range anti air has to deal with.
>We're talking about somehow marrying radar and / or optical sensors to a dispersed net (or just set) of lasers to accurately pick out and transmit targeting information about to lasers that is moving in 3D at high (and even near-supersonic when it comes to cruise missile) speeds. No. The laser is on the same assembly as your optical tracking system. It's zeroed to the center of the camera FoV once and after that just always points at what the camera is tracking. You don't need a disperse set of laser designators (even if it would be possible), only the launch units tracks and designates the target it is firing at.
How you assign targets to the lauch units is another question, but that's the case for every anti air system. It can be networked well with whatever other tracking systems are available, or operate autonomously, or anything in between. Gerans aren't hard to spot manually either, for cruise missiles a bit of advance warning will be necessary.

What can he do?
They have an offensive capability smaller than the undefendable baltic chihuahua states, economy is beyond fucked and their military industrial complex is essentially children, women and cripples rewiring toys to carry explosives and use of hardware store tubing with some cheapo chink engines and domestic plastic parts to make loitering munitions...
The weapons still out perform whatever the mutts can realistically send to Ukranda, but the chink parts are getting hard to import due to Chinese export restrictions.

Everything is fucked, everyone is depressed and the polished exteriors displayed to Kellog can't even fool journalists at the Guardian or CNN.
And while everyone wants the war to end, everyone also wants the grift to continue no matter what. And any dissent from the official line equates to treason.

There is only one conclusion to draw, they can throw more money on a lost cause and throw any US power projection out the window.
Or they can take the L, lose all credibility as a military power with no redemption arc (not even the Houthis can be defeated).

As for Kellog, there is nothing more to learn or take in from Ukraine.
Maybe they could send raw plastic explosives and detonator caps to them and eye a simple distraction (Iran may play ball and let the mutts bomb them again given that the last time they not only got to retaliate proportionally, they also got sanctions relief).

I would look out for military buildup in Romania with a focus on Gagauzia, or increased support to the Phillipines or some shit in Syria.
Ukraine is just a drain for everyone and the goal is to forget them.

this is a direct instruction being given to Europe by the US. You are pretending that obeying their every whim will lead to a weakening of US influence. That's still just a matter of relaying information to your anti air system, same as to every other one. It does not require multiple target designation units.
>hows that significant then if the engagement envelope of each APKWS SAM is minuscule?
I don't understand what problem you see with this? Even for longer ranged anti air systems using more than one guidance vehicle is extremely rare.
>And optical-only?
They have radar too I think, but optical only systems have been used to decent success in the past, google IRST. The Stormer HVM uses that, for example, as do some Chinese Gepard equivalents. And jets, of course.
>What about night time raids
Thermal optics
>or when the cloud ceiling is low?
Tough luck. But how often will the cloud ceiling be below the relatively poor altitude the APKWS can engage targets at anyways? Everything above 1500 m is probably a crapshot, and that might be generous.
>we're not talking about expensive Litening pods on F-18s anon, this is supposed to be cheap, dispersed but somehow yet effective point-defence weapons to such an extent that it makes sense as part of Diabetes Dave's wishlist
Optical target (well, contrast, at the time) tracking was first realized with analog circuitry in the 50s. It is a task that has long since been solved effectively and cheaply. The cost of some of those systems doesn't come from their tracking ability, but from their optical train (high zoom/resolution requiring fat and expensive CCDs and lenses, mostly).

fundamentally I don't see target detection + hand off to laser + laser accurately picking out & lasing the fast moving target + APKWS SAM being fired and taking out the target, all before the target has left the tiny envelope.

Typical westoid history revision.

Even when they lose they win.
And they always lose.

>Tu144 was result of industrial espionage of Concorde anda cheap copy, despite looking completely different and being the first to fly and enter service with higher top speeds (in fact the USSR got inspired by marketing brochures, and took the concept from "artist renditions" to real flying aircraft faster than the west could go from completed R&D to flying machine).
>"We won in Vietnam", despite getting our shit kicked in (muh KD, when only counting US losses and ignoring the bulk of the ground forces which was their Vietnamese proxies)
>Soviets lost in Afghanistan, despite achieving all military goals and installing a regime that held their grounds for over a year after the USSR got dissolved
>Finland loses all land they fought over in the winter war and continuation war, "muh KD". Karelia, Viborg etc are all Russian now. And Karelia was offered to Finland, for free (including the parts in Soviet before the wars started).
>USSR is first in every milestone of the space race, US plants a man on the moon and declares victory.

That's not really the order of actions, or how it would work, especially for very short ranged systems.
- target is detect long before it enters the engagement envelope the missiles flight perforamance offers
- target is tracked with optical system, which means the laser is automatically pointing at it too since it's essentially glued to the side of the camer
- missile is fired when/if target enters engagement envelope
That's the same for pretty much ever yother SAM system too.

>addendum: all done cheaply and effectively
The targeting system will be cheaper than what almost every other air defense system uses, and so are the interceptors. Effectively is a different question. With ground based launchers the range is extremely short, but if you're using them for point defense of targets you know will be attacked that's not necessarily that much of a problem. Gun based systems fill a very similar role.

You should be asking what happens the US empire expansion creates more war on Europe? And this war is the result. And you still support it because you support US occupation. And you also think "Europe" is a legitimate sovereign entity.
>- Hitler just wanted to conquer more land. The same is true of Putin
This war exists because of US backed NATO expansion to conquer more territories in the east and Russia finally responded after decades of provocation. Why do you allow US to commit any invasion, occupation, commit any crime, destroy any infrastructure, exploit any European country, yet Russian sovereignty is the red line for you?
