Pretty much every island has it's own culture and language. They're a perfect example of why diversity isn't your strength.

The successive military juntas ended up crushing any dissenting cultures across the island chain and force migrated Muslim Indonesians to displace and out vote the locals, so generally the islanders and west papuans hate them. They killed all their communists in the 70s in an anti-communist pogrom. All of their militarism has been supported by the US from the 70s onwards.

Fun fact I believe they're moving their capital because Jakarta is a swamp and it sucks due to mozzies, bad for building on, etc. They probably get malaria and other shitty diseases too.

SEA is interesting to me. The climate and geography is interesting. I wish whites colonised it early on so we could have a tropical country (we have temperate (UK), taiga (Canada, Scotland), med (Gibraltar), steppe (South Africa) and desert (Australia and North America), but we don't have any lasting tropical colonies.
