Because when we do it, people get butthurt. We built the modern word, we conquered the planet, we went to the moon, and while on top, we improved everyone's life in a way no other civilization ever has. So when we have pride for our accomplishments, people from other cultures internally view it as punching down on them. Because almost all of them suck, and they know that if they were in our shoes, they wouldn't have been as generous as we have been. The 500 years is just due to that's how far back that paper trail goes. If you have noble blood you can probably go back to the 1200s or so, but alas all my ancestors were just peasants. Also the majority of medieval records were destroyed in a fire. Not that they were as thorough as the post-reformation records.
