the painting with the cats is a great classic in german art history. my greatgrandparents had one like this in the toilet. takes your mind off things. buying wall decoration and (((collecting art))) are very different things. some wall decoration can be nice. some things can even work as a hedge.

it's a way to show off for the ones with more than sufficient means. also shows their philantropism. you're right about the gifts, but that usually requires an established relation both sides have profited from. e.g. gallerist/artist with gallery buying privately or middle manning a public commission. artists don't just give away. some even have difficulty parting with their stuff. which i consider a sign of good character.

it's not even practical for US soldiers to be taking art across the fucking atlantic ocean. the most they took was knives and maybe small guns. keep in mind that these were kids and not art aficionados. never have i ever heard a story about a ww2 veteran claiming to have art acquired from ww2.

They just see it as an investment. Most old masters will never ever go down in value as the best pieces are no longer on the market. So when nadsers took art from jewish collections or forcefully bought it for cheap it sometimes end up in museums. The remaining jewish family then wants it back cause its worth a shitload of cash.
