Always remember that this is actually late stage capitalism in that the company has no more reasonable growth and the only way to make line go up to appease the shareholders is to cut costs.
You see it's not enough to have a stable business that is consistently profitable...that business must always seek to be even more profitable each and every quarter.
At some point the market is saturated and you basically have all the customers you're ever going to have...so now you do shit like this to squeeze out one more quarter of growing profits. This squeeze, however, is like getting the last bit of juice from an already squeezed orange...
These are the preludes to the company failing massively.
Doesn't happen over night...these are slow deaths for these behemoths.
