after the fall of the soviet union in 1991, the US was the world's sole superpower until approximately 2008 with its twin political failures in Iraq and Afghanistan. the Russian intervention in the Syrian Civil War then crossed Obama's 'red lines', leading directly to the Arab Spring(s) and indirectly to the current war in Ukraine (a continuation of the Crimea-conflict). depending on the eventual outcome in Ukraine, it is certainly possible that the post-2008 multipolar world will further degrade (fail) into a non-polar geopolitical environment. however, the most likely outcome in the Ukraine war remains EU ascension of eventually NATO expansion to incorporate west-Ukraine officially. if west Ukraine does eventually become integrated into the traditional European framework, the likely formation of an EU-army would not represent a failure of the multi-polar world, but instead the formation of a third Superpower (along with the US and China), representing a rare victory for the multipolar world order and its national.
