Corporate chains account for somewhere between 60% and 92% of all imports. Small business owners only account for about 8% to 15% of all imported goods. The tariffs are, by a wide margin, affecting mainly corporate chains. They're essentially being taxed for importing goods. They either pay the increased levies or they search for a better deal locally, which depending on the market and how abundant it is, can seriously bolster local economies and businesses in key industries/resources in which we are rich of. I don't know about you, but I'm pretty sure the guy who studied economics in college and ran multiple businesses knows what he's doing here.

> inb4 muh bankruptcy

Fuck off. Irrelevant. The tariffs are bringing in massive revenue for the USG at the expense of corporate America. Trump is pressuring the rich and forcing wealth redistribution. Bernie Sanders could only dream of doing something this impressive. This is one of Trump's maneuvers that I can seriously get behind. Prices have remained stable or come down significantly since the tariffs and the threats of said tariffs.

Luckily the Dollar is crashing faster than inflation is going up so things are just getting cheaper for us, so far.

Last 3 months saw inflation of 2.5% every month.
All while the dollar is crashing.

i think a large part of that is corporations have already been charging the absolute max they can for an item. they have plenty of data to know what that is.
if you add a tariff they know they can't really raise prices much so they have to just eat it and profit less.
that being said they will deploy as much product shrinkage as possible

the big corporations can take the cut, this hurts the small businesses more
all businesses need to import materials because somethings just aren't available in america. from minerals to motors, and everything in between
small businesses have much smaller margins so a tariff hits them harder so in practice what will happen is the big businesses will feel a sting for the next few years but the small businesses will be flushed out of business because they can't afford to lower prices

If you buy foreign products instead of American, then you deserve to be fucked up the ass by tariffs. Buying foreign products is an act of treason against your own country. These people are lucky they don't get tarred and feathered like they used to do to traitors back in the good old days.

I have no sympathy for them. Either buy American like a real patriot or get fucked with the tariffs. Your choice, asshole.

For what it's worth, American companies lobbied very heavily for that to the detriment of Canada's own domestically owned industry.

Considering US jets had to intercept that rogue plane over YVR the other day...there's a fair argument to be made we're not that much of a real country. Shame, because Trump is having a hard time making the US a real country by disconnecting from Israeli control.

>An irrational belief system that free trade is always a net good for everyone
It's not an irrational belief system. What you're doing is irrational. What economists do is called RESEARCH. They spend long amounts of time aggregating and analyzing data to a rigorous standard. Then, they submit the results in this thing called a PAPER to an academic journal, where a bunch of other economists do their best to tear it apart from every possible angle (if it's a good journal). What the fuck are YOU doing right now to warrant your confidence? I'm not asking for the lie or an answer. Ask yourself that question and answer it privately. Then ask yourself if what you're doing right now isn't just parroting a bunch of bullshit you read on Twitter or 4chan.

It's not the Americans who must pay tariffs but the wholesale importers. They and the merchants are the ones who charge more from Americans to keep their profits high. Just compare the wholesale prices with customer prices, it's often several hundred percent difference. There was and is no need to increase prices just because of tariffs.

What do you mean? If things are stable then nothing happens.
If inflation goes up and dollar value goes down at the same rates, prices stay the same.
Things are actually more expensive because your purchasing power is less.
Can you explain what you're not understanding

everything can be made in america
but the issue is that it would take a lot of long term planning to really make that a reality
ignoring how expensive it will be for one you also need a properly educated and skilled workforce that can work in factories that make stuff more advanced than plastic lids
you need to move the economy in ways to where it would be reasonable for people to work in a factory, farm, or mine
and investors need to feel confident that their plan to make these places would be a good decision. how do you make conditions like those?

Producing stuff in America would literally triple the cost in many instances. Nobody is buying an Xbox for $1,800, so Microsoft would simply waste heaps of money building factories here for nothing.

I never mentioned factories. This is about fiscal barriers of entry and offshoring our manufacturing base.

We offshored our manufacturing base to generate profits. Now we are at the peak of what profits can be generated by offshoring literally everything to China and then up-charging Americans. China realizes they can just bypass the middle man that is the American corporation, which means the gravy train is over.

Wow what a clever and facetious guy, as if Americans weren’t making good money and better products than chinks before globalization was a thing. The point is that we used to buy sneakers made in America and no one batted an eye. If it was possible before it’s possible now. The tariff on shitholes softens the blow of having to compete with third world shitholes, end of story. At some point an American company will devise a way to manufacture shoes that are competitive with the third world while also guaranteeing the labor and environmental protections befitting of a first world economy. Any argument against this is Hebrew pilpul and you know it. What’s funny is I can name a hundred instances of companies outsourcing production then raising prices.

they've been made numerous times already ITT. you are making an argument that there are other factors that influence prices, but that was already a claim that I made like 30 minutes ago. you didn't even realize this. You also seem unwilling to accept that both the money supply and trade restrictions can influence consumer prices.

it's already been answered multiple times, including in the post to which you just responded. other currencies are fiat, obviously. The fact that tariffs have existed in the past very obviously isn't sufficient proof that adding subsantially more tariffs won't have an adverse impact. this shouldn't have been so difficult for you to surmise (either through simple thought or through reading my posts), and you've now spent several posts trying to deflect rather than accept this very basic and obvious fact.

Ok but why is inflation so low, then? Like, if tariffs are a tax which gets passed onto the consumer in the form of higher prices, why aren't the prices higher? Could it be that after four years of Bidenomics the American consumer market can't bear prices much higher than they already are, and that third world exporters need the American consumer market so badly that they just eat the cost and accept a lower profit-margin? Perhaps along with unfucking Biden's energy policy which means cheaper energy for production, cheaper gas for transport and tourism, and therefore downward pressure on prices. Globally of course, since the price of oil worldwide is driven downward by America's vast capacity for production.

The importers aren't necessarily Americans so the statement is false. Italians can come to America and operate import businesses thanks to their ties to producers back home. The Chinese do this as well. Then they sell the products to retailers in America. Import tariffs have been raised, not taxes. To avoid the tariffs these operations can simply produce their goods domestically whereas taxes require deductions or other loopholes.

Producing goods domestically adds employment and additional tax base in the US, that’s not “getting around” the law it’s the intended effect. You either suffer margin compression or you move production to the US.
