Because Europe isn't that much larger than Texas. The USA is gigantic most Europeans don't understand this. And before passenger trains were really built up over the USA, the age of flight came upon us. Quicker, faster to fly across America.
In any case building train lines that cross the USA was a megalithic feat, and many a rich man was busy trying to do that in the 1800s.
Also back then there was a LOT more of it.
Our passenger train rails have declined greatly since the 1800s. Again, because of flight.

Reality: Trains are obsolete.
Planes are way faster and lots cheaper.
Cars are faster and cheaper and you can stop, sleep in a real bed, eat, and shower. While trains are generally faster than cars, they make a lot of stops every few miles. We have a vast Interstate system. Generally speaking, most interstate shipping is done by truck because... it's faster and cheaper. Trains are great for super heavy and dense loads. Using them to move people is wasteful.
Then we get to buses. Buses are cheaper than trains and don't take as long but less comfortable. Basically trains and buses are transport for people who have no car and need to carry stuff they'd get tossed in jail for if they tried to take it on a plane.

I asked someone in the last time this thread came up why there isn’t a widely used train route between Denver and Boise. Of course there wasn’t a good answer. It’s only 800 miles, neither city is particularly large, and there’s a fuckload of mountains in between but come on, why haven’t we built the route yet?

Why does Turkey have so few and Germany have so many? Germany must have fucked up a ton of their beautiful nature to make such dense trainlines, and contrary turkey must only have Istanbul as a major destination, despite being fucking huge. France and Poland has the best train to nature ratio.
