Have you ever had to do a water rescue? I'm no emergency responder or anything but I had some basic training in the scouts and as a lifeguard and did rescue someone in a river once. It's fucking dangerous. They're panicking. They'll latch on amd push and pull you down drowing you too just for a few extra breaths of air if you let them. If your in your heavy clothes and all weighed down with gear like an officer is, especially if somone is bigger than you, I wouldn't go in either. There's circumstances where letting somone tire themselves out first and then attempting resuscitation if neccesary is just the smarter move even if it feels terrible to do. You don't want to turn one drowning into two.

Exactly. The river I was in wasn't wide but it was deep in that spot and a pretty swift current. I lifted him up best I could, broke away by going under when he was pushing me down, and repeated until i got him to shore. Fucking exhausting and he actually knew how to swim, he just got the bright idea of overestimating himself trying to carry his girlfriend who couldn't swim across the river, couldn't, and she started drowning him so he had already inhaled some water and was panicking. I'm a certified rescue swimmer and you cannot save an actively drowning person without a floatation device to put them on. Maybe a kid that can't drown you, but they WILL grab onto you and drown you. You become the floating device to a retarded drowning nigger. Wait until they pass out, then drag them out and begin resuscitation. Rescue swimming is easy but it's not so much about the training, you have to have the proper equipment which is any sort of adequate floation device. The techniques they taught me were bullshit and can still result in being drowned, basically to swim up to the flailing person and put them on the device. You should only do that if they're already passed out. Otherwise just extend or throw the device to them. Stay well the fuck away from them. There's nothing you can do to a panicking person to save them, you grab an arm they grab onto you, you grab a leg they kick you and try to stand on you, grab the body they try to grab you, and they will, you won't get away. A little kid us about the most you can save while they're actively drowning. Otherwise find a flotation device or wait for them to go unconscious and fish them out. All pools and boats should always have flotation devices around. They made me tread water for an hour and a half and I nearly died. I will never get on a boat that doesn't have adequate life vests if I'm not wearing pants that can be turned into a life vest. Learn that tactic too.

I was in swim training myself for decades. I can tell you that even a few pounds of weights are difficult to master when you have no bottom but water under your feet. A panicked drowning swimmer in a very cold natural body of water, with possible creepers wrapped around their legs, is dangerous even for Olympic swimmers.


I once pulled someone out of a lake myself, with two other rescuers, it wasn't even 20 yards, and I was so trained that two hours of swimming didn't bother me. But I had to fight really hard to keep the drowning man's head above water. The lake was full of creepers growing up to the surface.
