New building technology just dropped.
The Jigsaw Puzzle House

Why live in a house made of sticks when you can have a house made of pieces of sticks.

That isn't a new technique that's how old jap wood houses are all built essentially and they are fairly sturdy.
Granted they didn't use garbage foam american plywood it actually has woodworking involved

If I'm being honest, that doesn't look worse than your average subdivision builder. If anything, they can't fuck it up because it's so simple and the materials are probably cheaper.

Not great for all things, but useful for some applications.

And the glue still breaks down in 20 or 30 years I would imagine but instead of just floors it's the entire house.
So much better indeed.

The โ€œlumber sheetsโ€ are dome form of OSB, ie., Oriented Strand Board.
OSB is better than old fashioned chip board, but shittier than plywood.
OSB costs maybe 1/5 what plywood costs, which is why itโ€™s routinely used for building sheathing, and it can be made from left over chunks of limber from the lumber milling process.
If you need to build a test house, itโ€™s not a bad material to use due to lower cost, and as a proof of concept.

I legit have no experience with these soggy cardboard houses.

How can this possibly endure decades of existing? Doesn't it just rot away? It seems entirely porous, not solid at all, which means it absorbs moisture or gets damp or whatever. It looks like something you'd erect seasonally for a camp or something, not a building you'd permanently live in.

Is it made that way because there's an expectation that it will be demolished and has a life expectancy of like 20 years or something? I can imagine it being stable for longer than that?

Are they only built that way in low humidity areas? with not a lot of rain?
I can't imagine something like that surviving even a year or two in a location with regular rainfall

that isn't even plywood, it's chipboard which is just a bunch of wood ships glued together into a sheet.

Plywood is actually great, love me some baltic birch. Yeah the cheapest shit with tons of voids in it from home depot or whatever is trash, but good high quality plywood does not deserve the slander.

I wonder how 3d printed houses will fare once the process gets better, like auto placing rebar and conduits and stuff, maybe prepare some way to put up drywall. It seems kinda like a cheap brick wall without a bricklayer breaking his back doing it.

As someone who lives in a floodprone area, Fuck, No. OSB soaks up water like nobody's business and rots fast as fuck, not only that but it's a nightmare to scrub mold out of, I'd rather not have load bearing parts of my house be made out of something that disintegrates from moisture and is made in giant panels that would be a pain in the dick to replace once fully assembled. I'll stick to my shitty pine sticks thank you very much

a house made of a giant slab of extruded carbon fiber reinforced roman concrete would last a long time and arguably be better constructed than some flimsy 2x4 shack. If they can get it so you can set one of these machines up and it can reliably print the entire structure in a day it'd be game changing for housing markets.

True but the benefits of a flimsy 2x4 shack are the ease of maintenance and remodeling, it's easy to knock out and add walls or build additions unlike concrete, if part of a concrete structure breaks fixing it is a whole fucking ordeal, plus it's simple enough that most people can do it unlike concrete which requires a fucking phd in pourology to work with

bonding it to existing structures is as easy as sinking anchors into the existing structure and then forming an pouring around it

Yeah I can see why people are so into it. They won me over. Cheap 3d printing has been game changing where I work, getting parts that make no sense to injection mold or cnc (due to low volume and/or customization), it's really similar to these houses but on a smaller scale.

I think these would be on the mid-end construction, where people pay a bit more but get a real concrete structure. Florida hurricane area would be one place where that makes it attractive, also desert areas due to its heat capacity.
