>>510706560>>I think someday the world is gonna have to turn back to it to make synfuels for whatever still needs oil&gas Yeah, I'm a pretty hardcore doubter on battery tech to be honest. I think long term they're definitely gonna manage with cars or even the civilian trucks (and if they tow something, the range will be pitiful). But I outright can't see much of the heavy machinery dealing with how much weight batteries add. Not to mention the fact that our current fuels are "easy" to store and transport, compared to electricity.
I also can't see us managing the passive storage we would need to power an entire city through seasonal changes with just renewable and nuclear. Nuclear is fantastic but I bet politics would push the energy makeup into a renewable heavy direction. Genuine question if you could ramp enough and for how long you'd need.
Then there's the fact that traditional energy plants are far less expensive initially. With nuclear and renewables, most of the cost is upfront. But with burning stuff, the facility is cheap, with you paying far more for the fuel. It's also much quicker to build, so you can use it as a stopgap if an area is expanding quickly.
Oh and the fact that we need either oil or gas to make plastics (but I guess corn can technically do that right now?)
