In the Netherlands, only the sale of Weed is legalized.
There's 3 parts of cannabis legalisation :
- Production (growing)
- Selling
- Consumption (smoking)
And the only one that is legal under Dutch law is the selling/buying of weed.
You're not supposed to smoke weed outside in public, but of course Dutch police usually doesn't enforce this part of the law, especially if the people are in a park or another place where it's socially acceptable to smoke weed.
I've heard Dutch people say "The police don't care what you do in the privacy of your own home" but I've personally witnessed an instance of this exact thing happening.
I spent 6 months on a exchange program in Breda.
My neighbor, cool guy named "Pim", got a visit from the Dutch police because the bar downstairs from our appartment had complained they were using the emergency stair case and that it "reeked of weed".
The cops were outisde his door, and trying to get in, knocking at the door.
My freind was home, but hiding and ignoring the cops.
I came out of my room, told the cops that bro was gone, at work, and they eventually left.
Bro came out later and thanked me for saving him from the cops.
So yeah, I saw a Dutch person getting in trouble for "the smell of weed" in his own home in the Netherlands, so yes, the police can absolutely fuck you over if they wanted to.
Nevertheless, living in the Netherlands was really cool as a weed smoker.
Even just living there in general was pretty awesome.
Everyone rides a bike and I didn't see a single obese dutch person my entire time there, except when I saw a couple of american tourists.
The Netherlands is pretty neat overall.
