The whole 19th century was a painful time for the church, during the first half of the 20th century, the ecclesiarchy had set their mind to never again be "jumped up" by history. That is, "right side of history", "it's the current year and so on."
Culminating in the Second Vatican Council, entire generations of priests were formed under that mindset.
Things did not turn about as they could've, however. If you think lib-boomer priests are bad, you have no idea what we were saved from. The Church had plans to survive even if the whole world was taken over by communism.

1. When it removed the ability for priests to get married it ran into this:

Conversely: Orthodox Christianity allows married men to become priests, however it's a one and done thing and if he gets divorced or wife dies he's celibate.

This means the majority of Orthodox priests are husbands with wives, giant families. Men you'd want making decisions for the future / working with the public and children.

Humans pay attention to morals unlike animals.

We are at a stage where we cannot imagine being a chivalrous knight defending courteous love, or other auch higher moral standards of previous times.

A man who's not willing to commit to a life of celibacy is not a good candidate to assist his bishop's spiritual work.

The Catholic church schism'd. It left the other 4 parts of the Pentarchy alone (Jerusalem, Alexandria, Constantinople, Acre) and took all wealth/power/influence with it because the Germans declared themselves the new Roman empire and got a relative in the slot. Orthodoxy was/is and will be the same and produced many great saints without having to often compromise itself because one man is not the head of the entire body.
