for almost all orthodox, karaite, and torah observant jew it is not allowed to drive an internal combustion engine. some allow bicycles, most do not.
one of the main issues with automobiles is that they operate via combustion. there is a specific torah commandment to not kindle a fire on the sabbath. this is also the source of the prohibition of turning on lights on sabbath. you may have seen devices such as rotating shades that can be used to cover/uncover a light bulb which has been switched on before the start of sabbath.
reform and reconstructionist jews and such denominations do not follow torah therefore drive to synagogues. they also do not eat kosher etc etc. most orthodox rabbis consider them heretics and consider it a sin to even set foot in a place like that.
if you can look the place up on google maps you will most likely see what the denomination is.
