Spent my past 10 years chasing exactly that dream - albeit an america variant. Worth every challenge I had to overcome to make it happen. Got one of those condemned-tier homes for dirt cheap. Picked it because block walls, metal roof. Had to DIY electrical, plumbing, rebuild a c9uple floors from the joists up, rebuild the whole exterior drainage system (french drains & foundation tiles). After that, notbad.jpg. mortgage-free, finally.
