I can't open LinkedIn without seeing a new post from a former Microsoft employee, a white American, who lost their job in the company's latest round of layoffs.

Around 15,000 jobs have been eliminated at Microsoft over the past couple months -- the biggest cuts at the company in more than a decade.

Some new people have been hired as well but all were Indian.

I've spoken to more than a dozen Microsoft employees in recent weeks, and everyone is concerned about the company's direction in this AI era.

Morale is at an all-time low, and employees are worried that regular layoffs are simply the new normal.

Sources tell me that Microsoft's leadership team had the choice between reducing investment in AI infrastructure for the upcoming financial year or deeply cutting its headcount and operating expenses.

It's very clear what route Microsoft chose.

Meh. Microsoft already peaked as a company years ago and is now in the decline phase so they're going full ads and surveillance in an attempt to recoup the costs of all their employees and infrastructure. It doesn't really matter since people have Linux anyways, so we don't need anything new from Microsoft for much at this point.

People paying for Office 365 or whatever in their companies should change to some alternative or pirate it.
Same with a partner company for cloud services and whatever else.

It's been like that for years now in Microsoft.
Layoffs and hiring freezes were in place over here since the Covid boom ended.

As for AI, it's true, that is part of the reason today.
Pretty much all MS management are politicians, not engineers. AI is what they're selling today, so they have to race each other to show how on board they are. They must drink their own Koolaid, or they will end up on the chopping block.
AI cannot write complex software at the moment, but they must pretend it does and they must pretend to show they're replacing their workforce with AI.
