I completely disagree and in fact have seen 30-something NEETs totally turn their lives around twice now.

The truth is that as a man everything until about 30ish is a gimme. You were never the son of an emerald mining magnate or managing director at a wall street bank and so you were never going to be some rich 27 year old tech entrepreneur or congressman or whatever. Your 20s were always going to be mostly a waste. Now, ideally, you got some things that can help you later. Education is good since a lot of jobs and social circles have it as a requirement. Military service is pretty good since veterans get a major boost in hiring, certain political circles, an electoral boost, and access to methods of wealth building. And ideally, you’ve had some experiences be they work experience traveling health issues whatever that have given you some clarity on who you are and what you should do with your life. But that process of being who you are and doing something with your life doesn’t start until about 30s anyway. Those who get to start before 30 are the extremely lucky very few.

And keep in mind as well that most 30 somethings who have been grinding and are “successful” on paper now have basically nothing to show for it. They don’t really know what they should do with their lives. Worse, a lot of them have locked themselves down into mundane careers, debt, family life, a miserable marriage all kinds of existential prisons. I’m not saying marriage is an existential prison, but that some marriages can be. When guys get pussy they convince themselves they want what the pussy wants. Wifey wants to live in the suburbs? So do I! Even though without wifey he’d want to be an artist in the city or whatever. You get the idea. So if you’re a 30-something NEET and you have some sense at all what you ought to do with your life, you’re actually ridiculously lucky because 99% of 30 somethings are starting the race now at 30 something without that.

The real problem that NEETs have is usually actually not that they are NEETs. It’s that they have other mental/emotional/spiritual/physical baggage that made them NEETs in the first place, and that coupled with the inertia of not really doing anything is likely to keep them unsuccessful in the future. So escaping is hard, but it’s actually very simple. You just need to get over that baggage, make a decision what to do, and go do it, and do it with the patience and understanding of knowing it’s going to take 10 years of consistent effort before you’re good at something and that’s both okay and normal. Across history, men who mattered and did anything usually mattered and did something in middle age. It takes decades of effort. That’s just how it is. So NEETs need to accept that, and get to work.

I lied about my age to get my first job at 13yrs old. Through high school I worked 40hr per week to help support my family because my father could not cut it for various reasons. I worked through college. After college I got the first job I could in the construction field. Worked construction until recently. I got a massive head injury. Now I have epilepsy and I am blind in my right eye. My neurologist told me to apply for unemployment, she felt although I qualify. So she referred me to the epilepsy foundation after a tremendous amount of testing to verify my condition. The epilepsy foundation got me in contact with a specialized lawyer. I filed about a year ago. This has been the worst year of my life not being able to contribute to the household. I have never felt so hopeless and helpless. Am I a NEET. Yeah I guess but not by choice. I just hope my disability claim goes though soon so I can help my family start paying bills again. The only thing i have to pay for are my utilities and property taxes (which are not much) and I don't need to work for that.
